Students on the Beamline

I participated in a St. Thomas More Collegiate student research team investigating how temperature and cycling affect lithium-ion pouch cells. Our team studied samples from Tesla and Nano One using the Canadian Light Source’s IDEAS beamline.

Findings

The team reported minimal chemical change under the conditions tested. These findings were limited to the samples and test conditions; longer cycling or more extreme temperatures are expected to produce different results.

Methods

The team used X-ray fluorescence to investigate elemental composition and XANES spectroscopy to investigate chemical state. The public poster describes little chemical change in the Tesla samples and subtle nickel-related changes in the Nano One samples.
